Tech reuse – a win-win approach

When companies update their IT systems to meet their changing needs, they are faced with the question of what to do with their legacy IT assets. Issues of safety and security are likely to be at the forefront of their concerns, as any un-wiped data that gets into the wrong hands could cause serious problems – just look at what happened in 2013 when NHS Surrey auctioned off a second-hand computer with thousands of children’s medical records, earning itself a £200,000 fine from data regulators in the process. Many companies, wishing to err on the side of caution, opt for the blunt instrument of physical destruction (e.g. through shredding or melting equipment), and it’s certainly a valid option.

Cash for computers

However, physically destroying hard drives isn’t the only choice when it comes to effective IT disposal. At AssetCare, our ethos is geared more towards IT reuse – properly cleansing assets and then selling them on to a person or organisation that can make good use of them. There are a number of reasons for this – not least that it creates income for our clients that can be channelled into updating their systems, or into another area that will benefit their business as a whole.

Think green

Another reason to consider reuse is that it is simply better for the environment. As well as keeping them off landfill – remember, landfill and the incineration of computers is banned as they contain hazardous materials – recycling computer equipment often means that parts can be used in the manufacture of new machines. Computers are resource-heavy, so any measures that can reduce the amount of new materials required for assembly will have a net benefit on the environment. One study found that recycling old machines can slash the amount of materials needed for a new computer by up to 70%.

One man’s trash…

Finally, while your IT system may not be meeting the needs of your business anymore, there could well be someone out there who will benefit from it – for example, another local business or community centre. IT re-marketing is a key component of the AssetCare philosophy, meaning we always prefer to find a new home for equipment.

If you’re interested in re-marketing your IT assets, get in touch today. Our service includes asset evaluation, a data overwrite/hard drive wipe (Blancco) and a full identity removal from the equipment to get them ready to be resold. It’s a win-win for all parties.
